How I Spent
My Spring Vacation

Here...
Not on the Strand
Not in Kentish Town
but
in unassuming Highgate,
away from Thatcher’s War
Top of the Pops
and the London Zoo
lies
Karl
Marx

and my feet hurt.
The feet of
a punch-drunk Philistine,
sloshed on “History”

But the spectacle-girl
has a
sense of the occasion.
She’s practiced
a thousand times
in her sleep.
Carefully
the garland’s placed
and a contrived tear
is brushed aside.
The pilgrimage
is
over

The
profound moment
will live
forever
thanks
to that
Japanese man’s
Canon XL-101.
Tourists of the world,
unite.
