When First I Fell

When first I fell
In love, I fell
In love with Love
Herself.

In love, I fell
Into the arms
Of one of many
Lovers’ arms
Armed with arms
Of Love.

Interlude

Caught up in her task
In an innocent air,
She stands high on the chair
With her hair hanging down,
Dusting the leaves
Of the large green plants
In heavy round pots
Of baked red clay
Suspended
From the ceiling by chains.
Stirred
For a moment
By her touch, her care,
To life,
They sway slowly in the air
Above the smoke and caution
Of café chatter
While cherubs concealed
In corners play
The angelic airs of lute and lyre.
Out of touch, out of time,
Here and now
The music of another era,
Of a greater, far grander,
Endeavour.
