Pretender

The future is dreaded,
The past I regret.
No way to look forward,
Nor ever forget.

My present is stifled,
My life seem to crush.
I live for these moments
That don’t relate much.

I shield from the sunshine,
I hide from the rain.
My life is a burden
Of nothing but pain.

And still I proceed,
Is my face not a mask?
A simple pretender
Who’s not made to last.

I have to live steadfast,
And say I don’t mind.
I must keep my focus,
And never unwind.

The future is dreaded,
The past I regret.
No way to look forward
Nor ever forget.
