The Eye of the Needle

So intensely you store through me
you look beyond the block and white,
beyond the dreams you have to patch
your jeans and quilt your coat
and mend your shoes
There is no frustration here
as you patiently stare
I see in your eyes that you know
you will succeed

One day you ask me
what if I bleed?
I bleed, I say
No me, you say
you’ll bleed I know

Looking at your clumsy fingers
and all of your ambitions
sinking deeper
into the bottom of my sewing basket
I see you rummage through
old scraps that I thought were useless
this one! you say
as a child with a new game
and will I let you play?

you never asked

But there is no frustration here
as you patiently stare
I see in your eyes that you know
you will succeed.
