The Twelfth of November

The backdrop was a glorious clear blue sky
The foreground a glory of birds
And leaves in a mutual dance of joy.

To the trees, the birds had died and left them;
To the birds, these little reflections of themselves
Were as alive as themselves, which had come
To join in their play.

The leaves did not know they were dead.
The birds believed them to be alive.
And leaves and birds swooped
And swirled in and out
Around each other -

They were joined in a dance
Of ends and beginnings
I saw them yesterday.
Yesterday my brother died.
