[the forearm strains again]

the forearm strains again
above the wrist
below the back of the hand

peccable is the timing of this
and most unfriendly
a bitter coffee
in the morning
of my brief serenity

a failed appeal
in afternoon’s reprieve

the veins stand up
in the color of twilight
the twilight to come
pain after the hurt

and as the spasm
of night approaches
with its seizure promises
in all its tumored glory
the ever-able fingers wonder
why the pen remains

[there appears on the scene an ink embargo]

there appears on the scene an ink embargo
and three women in gray’s various shades
a pair of dead manacles in the dust behind
each pair of heels bare beneath firm tendon

the right, mother, but mother is not the word
her ancient belt, umbilical, a congested cord
and those weeds, her lacework of wrinkles
deepen with each pass of time’s plough

the left, lover, but lover is not the word
her feet burn scraps of footprint into the sift
and of course, the lines are yet too fine
to translate into negatives inveterate

the last, one fringe in the last strip of memory
tethers her companions with arms outstretched
her clothes are sopping with a secret skin
her eyes, the lasting acquaintance unknown

footprints belie a wandering in parallel splay
from horizons beyond the horizon behind
and these three in gray’s various shades
are dust, finer than fine plasma in decay

[cows by crumbling hills]

cows by crumbling hills
webs of backstop rust
blurs in quicksilver pan
outside bus pellet window
glass between glasses and view
glasses between eyes and glass
eyes between all and one
those receptive diplomats
slaked by such incidentals
as whipped gravel gray
the grayness of graves
as threshold green spruce
as cracked shale guardrails
as blacktop discipline paint
and everything else
that’s not inside
