A Sense of Paradise

Lilacs, I think, in bloom, and this year’s
catkins drooping. The classic stream
gurgling and blackbirds, bluejays,

sparrows chirping, all bathed in the
warmth of a Spring day; only, Sue
is much on my mind and perfection

is not thorough, the ginkgoes have not
triumphed; liquid warmth of tulips
shimmering in the breeze; what a funny

call that bird has, and that one, too,
invisible: Spring is not perfect, no,
Sue is elsewhere, not with me

After the Rain

Thin mist hanging over the park, crow
cawing from the depths
of the forest, river rushing

southward: echoes of sadness
as wind plays with branches
in late summer. Longing,

unsatisfied love mid the sounds
of the restaurant. The park,
empty, fades in the fog

Branches fluttering

Branches fluttering in the breeze
shelter under the tent beside
the River: a moment of emptiness,

mere contemplation, little more
than the sound of cicadas....
I would preserve these moments,

too infrequent. Heat, blue
heavens, sparrows, chatter of
blackbirds: I am not sure of

the purpose of anything other
than this, on a Sunday morning,
a still life in the shade.
