Slowly it passes into the western sky
Further and further,
Its colors casting themselves across the ocean waves.
It sits, suspended, waiting,

As I think, as I remember
A time gone by when people depended on the sea –
Respected it. A time when family was important.

As the sharp, clear, blue sky fades into a hazy brown
I think.

I remember, I relive
My memories as a child
Walking along the shore with my grandfather.

The waves thunder against the rocks
And I realize the sun is gone, and I am alone
With but a memory of the past.
And it is at that moment that I realize
The difference between what is, and what
Night and day

And my heart sinks
Further and further
Into the sea.

August 23

The ocean is loud tonight.
From the cliff
I can see the spray as the waves crash against the shore.

I’m standing here in the cold
Hoping the waves will be loud enough
To drown out the sound of your leaving.
