Editor’s Message:
Some experiences offer little, aside from embarrassing memories. As a younger man I would sometimes neglect common sense and gamble my tomato soup funds on a Lotto 649 ticket. My luckometer (an arthritic toe) always indicated a big win. The draws invariably left me depressed and hungry. Now I never buy lottery tickets.
After getting involved with Fathom, my luckometer began tingling again. I went out and bought a tie to wear at the press conference announcing the discovery of the “The Great Canadian Poet.” Dreams of literary luncheons filled my sleep.
This too was very silly but unlike the lottery ticket phase my experience with Fathom has not been fruitless. The large amount of material submitted was of a type unfamiliar to me. The better works (amply represented in the following pages) offer a naked presentation of ideas and emotions. I find such honesty touching and refreshing. On behalf of everyone at Fathom I offer thanks and encouragement to all those who courageously submitted poetry for scrutiny.
