The Backyard

who cares for these leaves    this dirt?
for this earth    this land?
who cares for this property?

i see the mess
j do the work
landlord doesn’t see

ten bags of leaves
one bundle of sticks
a bin full of used car parts

dreams make me bitter
I don’t dream grand
but might as well

bitterness makes love harder
not less

vision comes sharper
I wince at images     old friends
each a deep well      for falling
each wounded and wounding
     despair an infection
we harbour       pass on

I caught it from you
blame it on me

bitterness debilitates me
sick with fear     I am
too sick to hold

riding home

in the back seat
your elbow resting on the windowsill
hand in mine           & I feel
the car’s vibration through your fingers like tension
like cold
      the palsy of age

will I know you
when we’re old
& shaking?

car slows, stops
you say good-bye

my waving hand
casts a shadow     intricate
like an Indonesian dancer’s
full with a meaning
I don’t know

the quiet & the dark

in the quiet & the dark
I sketch your image in the air
with my finger

I sketch you as you have never been
beside me       warm     eyes closed
relaxed       asleep

I sketch you
for company
in the quiet & the dark
