Evolution

Through the smoking land
wandered a sole Neanderthal man
Club in hand
Blood oozing from gaping wounds
Shaggy. Filthy.
Dirt encrusted.
He squatted on brawny haunches.
A scarlet moon glowed eerily
through a nebulous veil.
All was silent.
The man-beast howled.

Millenniums passed and then...
Through the shattered, crumbling streets
trudged a lonely, broken soldier.
Gun in hand.
Blood oozing from gaping wounds.
Shaggy. Filthy.
Dirt encrusted.
He collapsed on quivering knees.
A scarlet moon glowed eerily
through a radioactive haze.
All was silent. All were dead.
The man-beast cried.

And through the smoking land
wandered a sole Neanderthal man....
