Class of ‘83

The unrough matting on the tiled earth
Smiled its contrived smile
Even while I tread freely on it.

A t.v. screen twinkled from above in the air-
Conditioned room, blinking “Best wishes...
Best wishes on your graduation.”
And without thinking it kept on blinking
Even after I moved on.

The faces were almost out of place;
Each one supposed to say, “Sorry I’m closed”
Was a book opened where men might read great matters

They were not doing as they were told
By the men who probe the cold determinable spaces.
