About

I remember talking to a man,
An Iranian I believe,
Bumped into him in a kitchen.
A war was going on outside.
Iran was trying to stop Iraq.
From slicing through its thigh,

This man and I.
We.
Spoke.

I asked him where he was.

From.
He said.

Somewhere. Some name I couldn’t pronounce.
Much.
Less.
Spell,
Even if my cockatiel’s life depended upon.

It.

After much (great) effort I finally squeezed from.
Him.
The fact that he was an Iranian by nationality.
It took much (great) effort to dig this out of his throat.
(the ground was hard, an early frost).

I asked him his opinion of the war and.

War,

In general.
He said.

Generals.
Have nothing to do with him.
Nor do politicians.
He said that he was a.

Plastic surgeon.

And that he was a.
Plastic surgeon.
And that he had.
Nothing to do with.

The war.
Wars in general.
Generals.
Politicians.

I said in reply, “Oh.”

I then found that he had.

Two sons.
Fighting.

In the war.

Something, somewhere, somehow.
Part of me.

Felt part of this man.
Who
Came from a place whose.
Name I couldn’t pronounce.
Much.
Less.
Spell.
Even if my cockatiel’s life depended upon it.

The part of this man I felt was.
Cold.

So cold that I asked.
Someone, somewhere, somehow.
To light a.

“Fire,” cried the Iranian Captain.
To one of the man’s sons.

Who.
Stood.
Behind an anti-aircraft gun.
That was pointed at the sky.
Pointed at the stars.
That weren’t shining because of.
The brilliance of our home sun,

The man and I discussed Hegel.
About whom I knew very little.
